17 Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

Matthew 5:17

What Law did Yeshua Fulfill?

The majority of Christians will claim that obedience to God’s laws is no longer required. That means they don’t have to observe Sabbath, keep the feast days, or be obedient to any of the other laws that are found in Torah.

That misconception is based on a lack of understanding of scripture and certain biblical principles that are actually found throughout its pages.

The law that Jesus fulfilled was the only one that needed to be fulfilled, because there was an outstanding debt:

The Law of Recompense.

The Law of Recompense simply requires that if you take something from someone or damage their property or they give you something then you are required to pay them back with the exact thing you took or broke or they gave you. If you killed your neighbor’s cow then you had to give them a replacement that was at least of the same age, breed, value, etc. or better.

Adam opened the door, gave satan the legal right to become the prince of this world. When man fell, it set in motion a requirement that had not ever existed before – blood must be shed to atone for sin.

It created a debt that man was not able to pay off.

And it stayed that way for a very long time. People who sinned had to offer a sacrifice, they had to shed blood in order for their sins to be forgiven.

For thousands of years prophets told of a Messiah who was coming, who would save the world, save us from our sin.

When He did come He told the disciples. He taught it. It is actually pretty interesting, He told His disciples what He was doing and they still did not know who He was. HE TOLD THEM!

He even explain that God’s law would remain, that no part will pass from it until heaven and earth pass – and heaven will NEVER pass which is why scripture tells us that we will be observing Sabbath forever, in the new heaven and the new earth (Isaiah 66:23-24).

He gave a stern warning about keeping the law and He described the Law of Recompense in verse 19 and related it to breaking God’s laws.

18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
19 Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20 For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:18-20

But we also see this law in action throughout scripture. Luke 14:12-14 is a good example and Matthew 7:1-12 is another, but there are others.

Still, He was able to fulfill the law and satisfy the debt because He was the first (the only begotten) like Adam. He was pure and unbroken, a perfect sacrifice – the sacrifice that satisfied the Law of Recompense.

God’s laws still apply and will forever. We know this because scripture tells us. We still live under God’s laws – except for the Law of Recompense and the debt was no more.

Thank you, Yeshua!

  1. Well said! While speaking to people one on one I will reference Revelation 12:17 & 14:12. They feel like the perfect bookend to the covenant.
