Who is your God?
You ask many believers that question and they will proudly say, “Yehovah God! or “Yeshua!”
Then they will turn around and choose to go to a football game on Sabbath or let their job, their desperation for mammon, consume them instead of allowing Yehovah to be their provider. They seek themselves for their provision insteading of trusting the One who promised to never leave us or forsake us as long as we are faithful and obedient to Him.
They put their trust in the world and seek after the things of the world instead of the things of Yehovah.
And they justify it with all sorts of excuses when in fact, Yehovah was very clear.
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
Exodus 20:3-6
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
And so many become their own god, serving their lusts of the flesh, even when those things are absolutely contrary to the Word of Yehovah.
Even when those things are detrimental to their spiritual health.
Even when those things are demonic.
Because, you see, most idols aren’t gold and flashy and obvious. You may have idols and not even know it.
Picture of an Idolator
Idolators are sneaky, especially “holy idolators.” They will raise their hands in church and call out all the Amens and Hallelujahs you ever wanted to hear.
But while they have a form of godliness but deny the power thereof.
5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.
2 Timothy 3:5-7
6 For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,
7 Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.
They are not submitted to the Holy Ghost and have one foot in the world because they just can’t let the world go. If you look, you will see cracks in the veneer, and works of the flesh will seep out. Sometimes it will be subtle (like the serpent in the garden), and other times it will be blatantly obvious.
And their pride will drive them to either hide it at all costs or lay it all out there and dare anyone to speak up.
They do what they want and don’t take rebuke well at all. Some may appear to receive the rebuke and may even seem repentant, but behind closed doors, it’s another story. They will rant and curse it, deny the problem, and reject and defy the spiritual authority over them.
Scripture gives us a good picture of the idolator.
5 Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these things the wrath of Yehovah is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.
Colossians 3:5-11
8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds, 10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him, 11 where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcised nor uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave nor free, but Yeshua is all and in all.
What does the new man look like?
If you recognize yourself in that scripture, it is time to stop being a prisoner. It is time to give your life to Yehovah and submit fully to Him.
SUBMIT FULLY.
Your life is not yours. Your possessions are not yours. Your family is not yours.
In fact, you have NOTHING without Yehovah.
Humbling yourself and realizing that is the first step to breaking free from the prison of idolatry.
So, what does this “new man” look like? What are the characteristics of this “elect of Yehovah”?
12 Therefore, as the elect of Yehovah, holy and beloved, put on tender mercies, kindness, humility, meekness, longsuffering; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, if anyone has a complaint against another; even as Yeshua forgave you, so you also must do. 14 But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection. 15 And let the peace of Yehovah rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let the word of Yeshua dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of Yeshua, giving thanks to Yehovah the Father through Him.
Colossians 3:12-17
Stop pointing the finger at everyone else, blaming them for your issues, and look inward.
Ask Yehovah to search your heart and root out anything that offends Him.
Ask Yehovah to kill off the things in you that are not pleasing to Him and to fill you with Him.
Bow to Yehovah. Get on your knees and truly humble yourself in body and spirit. Realize that you have nothing, you are nothing without Him.
Acknowledge Him as the Lord over your life and let Him have His way.
Ask Him to order your steps, to direct your path.
Pray for His will to be done in your life.
Pray for these things earnestly and honestly.
Then follow the prompting of the Holy Ghost. Let Him guide you.
If you don’t have spiritual authority in your life, find it. Ask Yehovah to direct you to the spiritual authority that He has chosen for you, then submit to that authority.
17 Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you.
Hebrews 13:17
Idolatry is Death
Scripture tells us to flee from idols.
There is no love there, no hope, no salvation, no life.
Most of all, Yehovah is not in it.
You can’t be holy and have idols in your life.
Yehovah does not compromise. You either love Him and choose Him or you live a life of powerlessness, death, and a life far from Him.
Powerlessness, death, and being far from Yehovah – that’s what your idols promise you.
Do you have idols? Ask Yehovah to reveal them to you and start dealing with them. Enlist the help of the spiritual authority that Yehovah puts over you.
You can be free, but first you have to admit that you are a prisoner, that you are in bondage to your idols.
And when you come face-to-face with that, don’t stay there.
