There are mornings when the bed is too warm, the mind is too busy, or the soul just feels heavy. This morning, I simply didn’t feel like praying.

I had to be completely honest with God. I asked Him to help me because the desire wasn’t there, but I knew a fundamental truth: God’s primary love language is obedience.

If you are walking through a spiritually dry season right now, take heart. Choosing obedience over your emotions is the exact catalyst that transforms a routine quiet time into a powerful encounter with the Living God.

🛡️ The Battle of the Flesh vs. The Spirit

When we skip prayer because we don’t “feel” like it, we let our emotions call the shots. But Yeshua didn’t say if you pray; He said, “When you pray…” (Matthew 6:6).

In the Garden of Gethsemane, He looked at His sleeping disciples and asked a question that echoes down to us today:

“What! Could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.” — Matthew 26:40-41

Our flesh will always look for an excuse to stay silent, but our spirit thrives on connection with the Father.

📜 The Power of Shema

When your feelings tell you to walk away from the prayer closet, that is the exact moment to anchor your soul in the truth:

“Shema, Yisrael! Yehovah Eloheinu, Yehovah Echad”
(Hear, O Israel: Yehovah our God, Yehovah is one) — Deuteronomy 6:4

In Hebrew, the word Shema means so much more than letting sound waves hit your ears. It means to hear with the intent to obey. It is an action word.

True love for God isn’t measured by a fleeting emotional high; it is measured by a steadfast decision to listen and align your heart with His will. As Scripture reminds us, obedience is better than sacrifice: “Has Yehovah as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of Yehovah? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice…” (1 Samuel 15:22).

Yeshua also connects obedience directly with love when He tells us plainly, “If you love Me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15).

⚓ Fixing Your Heart in the Desert

Don’t be discouraged when you find yourself walking through a dry, barren place. Your feelings do not dictate the presence of God. You can look at the dryness and confidently declare like the Psalmist:

“O God, my heart is fixed; I will sing and give praise…” — Psalm 108:1

When you make a quality decision to say, “Oh Yehovah, my heart is fixed. I’ll hear you and obey. I’ll set my heart to seek your face whether I feel it or don’t,” you create a landing pad for the miraculous.

🔥 The Breakthrough of His Presence

This morning, as I pushed past my feelings and simply began to pray, Yeshua met me in a powerful way. The Ruach HaKodesh (the Holy Spirit) flooded my heart. The overwhelming, lifting love of Yehovah completely broke the heaviness.

When you choose obedience over emotion, He will meet you there, too. He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Hebrews 11:6), and He promises to pour water on the thirsty land and floods upon the dry ground (Isaiah 44:3).

Obedience over how you feel pleases God immensely, and He will never leave you empty-handed.
